Introducing: Thebe Ya Batho, The People's Shield

As the year draws to a close, we look back on the incredible progress our learners have made at UluntuXD. This year has been all about growth, innovation and most importantly, developing impactful digital solutions to improve the lives of those who need it most. Today, we are excited to share with you a remarkable milestone, the launch of Thebe Ya Batho, The People’s Shield, an app developed by our learners to address the critical challenges of township communities.

A solution born out of real world needs

Thebe Ya Batho was developed with the specific needs of township communities in mind. In these areas, issues such as slow emergency response times, a lack of security patrols and the absence of neighbourhood watches often put people in dangerous situations. The app is designed to give users control, power and dignity, especially in times of crisis. It's not just a technical achievement, it's a symbol of what can happen when user-centred design meets a real-world problem.

One of the app's most important features is the “Panic/Help Me” button. This feature allows users to immediately alert their selected emergency contacts in an emergency and notify others nearby that they are in danger. This extends the reach of help and ensures that no one has to face danger alone.

For many households in these communities, often headed by women, children or grandmothers, time lost in an emergency can mean the difference between safety and harm. The app provides these individuals with the immediate reassurance and power they need, helping them to restore their sense of safety and control in the face of danger.

 A simple but effective tool

The beauty of Thebe Ya Batho lies in its simplicity. It does not overwhelm the user with complex functions. Instead, it focuses on what matters most in an emergency: speed, accessibility and the ability to call for help quickly. The app not only sends alerts, but also discreetly records the situation and collects important data to help with rescue efforts.

This feature is crucial for the most vulnerable in our communities who may otherwise feel helpless in a time of need. The app is a tool that restores a sense of agency to individuals who have been powerless in emergencies in the past.

Impact on communities

We are particularly excited to test Thebe Ya Batho in Sebokeng, KwaThema and Soweto township areas that face unique challenges in safety and emergency response. During the usability tests, we saw a profound emotional response from users. Many expressed deep gratitude for having a tool that can truly change their lives. There were tears, hugs and overwhelming appreciation from those who tested the app, proof that Thebe Ya Batho is not just an app, but a lifeline.

We at UluntuXD are very committed to reaching out to people who need these kinds of solutions. We have always focused on developing products that give power, dignity and hope back to marginalised communities. Thebe Ya Batho is just one example of how design can accelerate positive change and empower those who need it most.
